The influence of healthcare professionals on medical interpreting recognition and development

Numerosos estudios demuestran que las barreras lingüísticas a las que se enfrentan los profesionales sanitarios al comunicarse con los pacientes alófonos disminuyen la calidad de la asistencia prestada. Sin embargo, en los servicios sanitarios españoles con frecuencia se infravaloran estas dificultades comunicativas y se recurre a la interpretación ad hoc para tratar de superarlas. El propósito principal de este artículo consiste en mostrar cómo el desconocimiento por parte de los profesionales de la salud sobre la complejidad del rol del intérprete y sobre los riesgos que conlleva el empleo de intérpretes sin formación contribuye a que se recurra a estos últimos. Asimismo, en última instancia, pretendemos resaltar la influencia que ejercen los profesionales sanitarios en el desarrollo de la interpretación médica.The linguistic barriers that healthcare professionals encounter when communicating with foreign language-speaking patients diminish the quality of medical care, as has been demonstrated in several studies. Nevertheless, in Spanish health services, these communicative difficulties are frequently underestimated and, in order to overcome them, ad hoc interpreters are used. The main objective of this article consists in showing that the use of untrained interpreters partly derives from healthcare professionals’ unfamiliarity with the complexity of the interpreters’ role and their lack of awareness of the risks involved in communicating through unqualified interpreters. La comunicación intercultural en el ámbito de la salud reproductiva. Propuestas de mejora desde la interpretación en los servicios públicos y la mediación lingüística y cultural. Estudio de caso de un hospital aragonés

El propósito principal de esta tesis doctoral consiste en analizar la comunicación entre los profesionales sanitarios españoles y los pacientes procedentes de otros países y culturas. En concreto, se trata de un estudio de caso realizado en un hospital materno-infantil y centrado en el ámbito de la salud reproductiva y en la comunicación profesional‐usuaria durante el embarazo, el parto y el puerperio. Mediante las técnicas de análisis documental, entrevistas y grupos de discusión, se persigue estudiar cuáles pueden ser las barreras que limitan o impiden el acceso y uso de los servicios de obstetricia por parte de las usuarias inmigrantes, las causas que subyacen a estas barreras, y las estrategias que se podrían emplear para reducirlas o eliminarlas, entre las que se destaca el recurso a la interpretación y a la mediación profesionales.The main purpose of this doctoral thesis consists in analysing communication between Spanish healthcare professionals and patients coming from different countries and cultures. In particular, it is a case study conducted in a maternity hospital and focused on reproductive health and communication between healthcare professionals and women during pregnancy, delivery and postpartum. Document analysis, in-deep interviews and focus groups are used to identify the barriers that hinder or impede access and use of obstetric services by immigrant women, their causes, and the strategies that could be used in order to reduce or eliminate these barriers, paying special attention to those strategies related with professional public service interpreting and intercultural mediation

Remote interpreting in Spain after the irruption of COVID-19: A mapping exercise

Remote interpreting, particularly telephone interpreting, was implemented in Spain less than 20 years ago and, since then, it has become increasingly common. Its use has even increased during the last months, due to COVID-19 circumstances and the subsequent growth of telecommuting. This paper aims at mapping remote interpreting services in Spain. With that purpose, structured qualitative interviews were conducted with representatives of the six main Spanish companies offering these services. The results show a diffusion of telephone interpreting across the country andan incipient presence of video-link interpreting. Nevertheless, more attention to quality performance and working conditions should be paid.La interpretación remota, en particular, la interpretación telefónica, se implementó en España hace menos de 20 años y, desde entonces, su uso se ha vuelto cada vez más habitual, llegando incluso a incrementarse en los últimos meses, debido a las circunstancias derivadas de la COVID-19 y el consecuente aumento del teletrabajo. El propósito de este artículo consiste en realizar un mapeo de los servicios de interpretación remota en España. Para ello, se llevaron a cabo entrevistas cualitativas estructuradas con representantes de las seis empresas principales que ofrecen estos servicios. Los resultados muestran una difusión de la interpretación telefónica en todo el país y una presencia incipiente de la interpretación por videoconferencia. No obstante, se debería prestar mayor atención a la calidad de la interpretación y a las condiciones laborales de los intérpretes

Recursos digitales para la formación de intérpretes en ámbito sanitario: ¿un nuevo papel para los formadores?

In today’s dynamic world, countries with large immigrant population have to accelerate the curricular reform of the degrees in Translation and Interpreting to ensure that public service interpreting is carried out by qualified professionals. This premise inspired us to start a joint project with the primary aim of creating training materials for public service interpreters—in particular medical interpreters—with active Romanian and Spanish in their combination together with other European languages. As a first step, we (i) studied and compared the state of medical interpreter training in Romania and Spain and (ii) gathered and analysed good practices regarding medical interpreter training. This paper aims to present the characteristics of a relevant corpus of digital resources for medical interpreting training and underline their potential consequences for the trainer’s role. The selection is based on the country of origin and on the usefulness of the content. We classify, describe and analyse the materials systematically and suggest possible improvements.En el actual mundo dinámico, los países que acogen a un gran número de inmigrantes deben acelerar la reforma curricular de los grados en Traducción e Interpretación con el fin de garantizar que la interpretación en los servicios públicos es llevada a cabo por profesionales cualificados. Esta premisa nos impulsó a desarrollar un proyecto conjunto con el objetivo principal de diseñar materiales para la formación de intérpretes en los servicios públicos —principalmente, intérpretes en ámbito sanitario— cuyas combinaciones lingüísticas incluyan español, rumano y otras lenguas europeas. En la primera etapa, a) estudiamos y comparamos la situación de la formación de intérpretes en ámbito sanitario en Rumanía y España, y b) seleccionamos y analizamos buenas prácticas en cuanto a la formación de intérpretes en ámbito sanitario. Este artículo se propone presentar las características de un corpus relevante de recursos digitales para la formación de intérpretes en ámbito sanitario y poner de manifiesto las posibles consecuencias sobre el papel del formador. La selección se basa en el país de origen y la utilidad del contenido. Además, clasificamos, describimos y analizamos sistemáticamente los materiales y sugerimos posibles mejoras
